The dialogue was colorful, but I didn't feel it had a consistent sense of suspense. The 'conflict' (one of the only ones we get) felt more of something you'd find in an episode, rather than a movie. (Stephen looking for a job). In fact, this special just felt like a really long episode, due to the fact it didn't have much of a conflict. I felt there were some of unnecessary scenes as well, like the support beam falling. It was rather pointless. Perhaps if it had become a hindrance in the restoration, or something. Going back to the suspense thing, from the beginning you could tell he was restoring Ulfstad Castle, so it didn't feel like much of a mystery. Jumping ahead a bit, I'd like to know why Stephen's driver and fireman didn't shout to Thomas, or even Stephen himself. Not going to talk about Connor and Caitlin, though credit to Brenner for trying to make them fit into the story. Animation wise, there were things I liked and things I didn't. Direction of shots were beautiful, and the steam and sets looked superb. But I disliked how the interior of the mouths looked. They felt too....grey. And some scenes in/near the Steamworks depicted the eyes as almost the same color as the faces. I also had an issue with the overall look I couldn't pinpoint. It just didn't feel like it had....depth.....no thats not it. I can't describe it but I feel it had to do with the lighting. I also had one other nitpick. The lower eyelids. They were awkward, and too frequently used. They worked in some places, not so much in others. This aspect didn't feel so natural. :P Anyway, I'd give this special a 6.8/10. These are just m opinions, and whether anyone agrees or not is of their own choosing. Great review though Chris, enjoyed reading it. :)Calebtrainhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08946805014676253844noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941188284965945680.post-20433709205495150962013-09-28T07:51:16.564+01:002013-09-28T07:51:16.564+01:00Well put! However, since the TV series had a knack of making little tweaks from the original stories, I'd say it was more likely to be set between 1980 and the present dayChrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16256608035072085353noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941188284965945680.post-5836405814929749412013-09-28T07:08:01.628+01:002013-09-28T07:08:01.628+01:00Splendid review, Chris. Just one thing: what time period do you think King of the Railway's set? I like to think it's 70s/80s (to work with the Railway Series) but some sources suggest that it takes place in the current day, 2013. What's your opinion?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12247385171801748654noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941188284965945680.post-66860911201357500402013-09-25T23:55:14.965+01:002013-09-25T23:55:14.965+01:00I loved every minute of this special! I didn't mind if there were some goofs here or there, seeing it's Arc's first project with Thomas and Friends, so it takes a bit of time for them to improve a bit like Nitrogen did. Also, not sure if you noticed this part or not, but I cracked up when the three engines were arguing who would pull the Earl's train, Percy began by saying "Sir Topham Hatt said--" "Hello Percy, Thomas, and James....." Idk, I found it hilarious after Sir Topham Hatt came in after Percy was about to finish his sentence, coincidentally! That's one bit of humor I enjoy a lot! So they weren't all that far off if you think about it.Will I Amhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00847638677778978627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941188284965945680.post-74822960943011226862013-09-23T20:31:40.234+01:002013-09-23T20:31:40.234+01:00Thanks! :) It was nice to get it off my chest! Thanks! :) It was nice to get it off my chest!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08268154114574821124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1941188284965945680.post-54016774656244183852013-09-22T20:26:53.312+01:002013-09-22T20:26:53.312+01:00I'd never read that before. Let me quote the book:<br /><br />"In addition to the Jubilee Bridge, there is also a double track railway bridge, the property of the NWR. It is a Schertzer Rolling Lift Bridge of some 120ft span designed by Mr Topham Hatt, and erected in 1915 when the NWR was built." Speaking as an Irishman myself, it made me cringe to listen to them talk throughout the special. You'd think with Sodor and Ireland near eachother, the voices would be authentic, but no. Apologies for the rant but that's just the way I feel.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08268154114574821124noreply@blogger.com
